Marilyn Monroe and Photographer Eve Arnold (BBC Documentary)
EMERGE_melbourne is honoured to present for online Auction a selection of LIMITED EDITION photographs by the acclaimed EVE ARNOLD.
Eve Arnold was a pioneering American photojournalist and one of the first women to join Magnum Photos, but her most profound work came from her deep, enduring connection with Marilyn Monroe. Over a decade, Arnold captured not just the glamorous Hollywood star the world adored, but the real, vulnerable woman behind the persona. Their bond went beyond that of photographer and subject—Arnold became a confidante, a friend who Monroe trusted to reveal her truest self. Through Arnold’s lens, we see Monroe’s struggles, her longing, her laughter, and her moments of quiet reflection. Each photograph feels like a whispered secret between the two, a testament to their shared trust and intimacy. It’s through Arnold’s eyes that we glimpse the depth of Monroe’s spirit, making their collaboration an unforgettable part of both their legacies.
These last prints made by Eve Arnold herself are not only rare but also hold immense importance in the art world. These prints, developed directly from her original negatives, reflect Arnold's meticulous standards and artistic vision. Each piece is a culmination of her years of experience and dedication to capturing intimate moments, particularly of iconic figures like Marilyn Monroe. Because they were created under her supervision, they provide an authentic representation of her work, making them invaluable to collectors and institutions alike. The uniqueness and direct connection to Arnold elevate these prints beyond mere photographs—they are cherished artifacts of her legacy and a testament to her significant contribution to the field of photography.
All prints are certified by Magnum Photos and Halcyon Gallery UK as Limited Edition of 99 , made from original negative and upon completion of this edition, Eve Arnold, Magnum Photos and Halcyon Fine Art warrent that this will never again be reproduced in this size and that this negative is now retained by the Beinecke Manuscript Library at Yale University.

This artwork & easel are a time capsule collection piece that captures not only a moment of art history but also the last moments of creative expression of the known father -figure of Australian artists.
Accompanied in the auction is perhaps one of Arthur Boyd's very first bride paintings, whimsical David Boyd Children & Orchids and rare to find early Pro Hart pieces. The final 5th , never before sold work from the 'Wrecked Cars' series by Graeme Roche, a gift from Roche's wife now available for the very first time at auction. And stepping back in time with works by the celebrated colonial artists James Howe Carse & Henry Rielly.
